THE GOSPEL (GOOD NEWS)
God expresses His relentless pursuit of us through the gospel. He loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life, be crucified on a cross for our sins and raised from the dead. When we repent and believe the gospel, God immediately begins to put broken hearts, broken lives, and broken families back together. He helps us recover and pursue His design. We become better spouses, parents, children, neighbors, friends, bosses, and employees. The gospel changes us! It changes families, neighborhoods, and cities.
OUR BELIEFS
Throughout the history of the church, followers of Jesus have been identified by what they believe. At Cornerstone Baptist Church, our beliefs and our governing bylaws all reflect the doctrinal positions and intent from God’s Word. You will find a complete copy of our doctrinal positions on our website.
THE BIBLE
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV)
We believe the Bible is God’s Word of absolute truth and authority for all people, at all times, and in all places. It is the guide for living the Christian life in practice and doctrine. We believe both the Old and New Testaments are without error, verbally inspired—and are the reliable Word of God. It discloses the gospel of Jesus Christ for salvation and Christlike growth for the believer. The Bible is the foundation for all we believe.
JESUS
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
We believe that salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. The gospel is Jesus: His death, burial, and resurrection. He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the only way to the Father. We believe that all who call upon the name of Jesus as Savior will be saved and spend eternity with God.
MAN
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. “ Romans 6:23
We believe God made man, male and female, in His image. Man rebelled (sinned) against God which brought physical death and spiritual death—separation from the Holy God. This means all human beings are born with a sin nature and are lost apart from salvation in Jesus Christ alone. Our beliefs about sexuality, the sanctity of human life, as with all topics, are based on what the Bible says. You will find these statements included in our church bylaws.
BAPTISM
“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.” Acts 2:41
We practice baptism by immersion – the way Jesus was baptized and the way the Bible commands. It is a picture of the gospel symbolizing the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism is for all believers who have put their faith and trust in Jesus alone. As a church ordinance, baptism is part of the journey toward membership as well as participating in the Lord’s Supper.
THE LORD’S SUPPER
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11:26-28
We practice the Lord’s Supper on a regular basis. It is a symbolic act of remembering the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus as we anticipate His second coming. We also examine our spiritual state confessing and repenting of all known sin to not dishonor the sacrifice Christ made for us. It is to be observed by baptized believers who are members of a local church.
